Contract and Bonus contract: Initially the contract and bonus process was created for 17 to 24 year old street youth. There were 30 young people who had been on the street and made the decision to say they wanted off the streets. The program was known as the back door. You can know more about it by reading the book about it. The Back Door, an experiment or an alternative is available as a free download.
The philosophy was simple: people who needed money were begging the streets. The people who were giving money said they were tired of being ripped off, or taken advantage of. The contract and bonus process became a simple solution. If you (street person) want money then tell us what you want it for. If you want it to better your life then here, the bonus is for you. I will help. If you want it for negative use I cannot give for that purpose. Hence, the contract is a statement of purpose and the bonus a gift, an investment in your attempt to better your own life. Because the idea of giving money to people was controversial the bonus was viewed as an incentive to continue participating in the contracting process. The bonus became a reward for creating a contract. Historically, once the non street person was convinced of the legitimacy of the street youth’s commitment many donors came on board. The process used by The Back Door is now over twenty years old and over 225,000 contracts strong. Others around the world are now experimenting with the concepts. This process is known as cash transfer programs.
